Many people agree that the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur is one of the most beautiful regions of France. From the seaside to the inland, this area in the south of France offers any kind of outdoor activity you could think of, all year around.
One of the most beautiful natural attraction is the Verdon Gorge, a river canyon about 25 km long that flows into the artificial Lake of Sainte-Croix. The river is famous for its turquoise-green water, which is first admirable from above on the way to the lake side, while driving down a winding road at the top of the canyon. Be careful on the hairpin bands and look out for people parked on the side of the road taking pictures, especially near the bridges.
Although there are many beautiful hikes around the river, the principal attraction is the water itself. There are many different rental companies for kayaks and canoes, and the majority of the river length is accessible to everybody, first-timers included. Most companies allow dogs to ride with their owners, and they will also supply a waterproof container to store cameras and small backpacks – this way you won’t have to leave any valuable thing on the beach.
Because of its popularity, the Verdon Gorge (and surrounding area) can get a little crowded in the central months of summer, so if you wish to avoid the majority of tourists, you should probably try to visit during spring or early fall.
